The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Volume 4. The First Edition.

This volume is fully bound in leather with red mottled edges to the text block. On the front paste-down there are 2 labels; top left is "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath "Property of the Laurence Sterne Trust, 1986". Written in ink on the front free end-page is a previous owners signature."Geo Oxenden". On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp with "Laurence sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. The spine has 5 raised bands with gilt foliate decoration surrounded by gilt borders in between. The title piece is in the second block, in gilt on 2 lines on an ox-blood background "Tristra Shandy". Underneath in gilt is "4" with a foliate border. The board faces have a gilt border of 2 lines and the rims have impressed decoration.
