The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. The Third Edition. Volumes 3 and 4.
This volume is fully bound in marbled leather over boards. On the front paste-down there are 2 labels; top left "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall" with underneath "Property of the Laurence Sterne Trust, 1986". Above these are 3 lines of pencil notes "1st Dublin edn of III + IV (KM 2nd copy) fp in this copy bound with IV marbled page misbound in IV after p.24". On the reverse of the title page is a circular stamp with "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside. The frontispiece to Volume 4 depicts 'The buttoning of Walter's Breeches' with top right "Frontispiece Vol. 4 Page 86" and bottom left "Frontispiece to face the title". (No illustrator/engraver details). Vol 4 between page 24 - 25 is the misbound marbled page with "Third Volume" written in pencil above it. The spine has 6 raised bands. The title piece is in gilt capitols in the second panel down "Tristram Shandy Vol I & II" on a dark green background, surrounded by a gilt border. The catchword is to the bottom right of every page.
