The Sermons of Mr. Yorick. Volume 1.
This volume is quarter bound in leather with marble paper boards (nonpareil pattern (?) which are clearly cut from the same piece of marble paper). The front paste-down has 3 labels; "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall", underneath this is "Property of the L S Trust, 1986". Within the centre of the page is a large bookplate "S&B" intertwined and underneath a crown. The reverse of the free end-page has "SYI-1b H", "sig B state X", "No 'vol1' on sigs B, C, D in this copy". written in pencil. The title page has a device underneath the title and on the obverse of this page is an ink stamp "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" in a circle with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside it. The same device is used on the title page in both Volume 1 and Volume 2 (although it is darker in volume 1.) The spine has 4 raised bands, any title piece there may have been is difficult to see due to the degraded condition.
