The Sermons of Mr. Yorick. Volume 1.

This volume is fully bound in leather and the edges of the text block have red mottling. The front paste-down has 3 labels; "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall", underneath this is "Property of the L S Trust, 1986". Within the centre of the page is a large bookplate with a heraldic device, but no name, which has off-set onto the adjoining free end-page. The obverse of the free end-page has "SYI-3AH" written in pencil top centre. On the obverse of the title page is an ink stamp "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" in a circle with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside it. There is the usual Dodsley's printers device underneath the title. The frontispiece is opposite the title page and is a full page cut of Laurence Sterne within a roundell with "Laurence Sterne A.M. Prebendary of York etc" in capitols on 2 lines within a cartouche. To the top right corner is "Frontispiece, Vol I.", bottom left is"?" and bottom right "Ravenet sculp.". The writing to the bottom left has been cut through as the page is cut at an angle. This frontispiecs has off-set onto the adjoining title page.The spine has 5 raised bands. The title piece has faded due to degredation of the spine, but it is capitols impressed on 2 lines "Sterne's Sermons". The edges of the boards are decorated, but no evidence of gilt.
