The Sermons of Mr. Yorick. Volume 1 and Volume 2.
This volume is fully bound in leather over boards with red mottling to the edges of the text block. The rear board is missing and the volume has been wrapped in a thick piece of paper which has areas dfied brown to simulate leather. The front paste-down has 2 labels; "From the Library of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall", underneath this is "Property of the L S Trust, 1986". Also on this page are some notes in pencil; "Vol 3 unif..", "352" and "KM 2nd Ed A" is crossed out. The front free end-page is missing and the frontispiece and title page are loose. The frontispiece has been glued to a piece of white paper which has been cut to fit, and is a full page cut of Laurence Sterne within a roundell with "Laurence Sterne A.M. Prebendary of York etc" in capitols on 2 lines within a cartouche. To the top right corner is "Frontispiece, Vol I." (This image has been cropped but is likely the Ravenet and Reynolds one ?). The same device is used on the title page in both Volume 1 and Volume 2 (although it is darker in volume 1.) On the obverse of the title page of Volume 1 is an ink stamp "Laurence Sterne Trust Shandy Hall" in a circle with "The Kenneth Monkman Collection" inside it. Written in ink on the top right of the title page for volume 2 is "P.D." with "SYII-Ib G" in pencil underneath. Written in pencil on the rear board is "VR 7 vols in 4 (vol 3 not ?)". There is also a smudged pencil note on page xi and on page 103 volume 1.
