Collaborations with Artists

…any one is welcome to take my pen, and go on with the story for me that will…

— Laurence Sterne, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman

Sterne's Artistic Legacy

An interest in Laurence Sterne is not confined to academic study and scholars of 18th century fiction.

His artistic legacy is immense; writers such as Italo Calvino, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Orhan Pamuk, Salman Rushdie, and Vladimir Nabokov are just a few of the many who acknowledge a debt to Sterne.

His creative approach is still a vital force in generating new work in the present day by artists of all disciplines. Writers, musicians, performers, ceramicists, actors, and particularly, visual artists are all energized by Sterne.

The Laurence Sterne Trust encourages and promotes new work by those stimulated by Sterne’s innovative genius. Sometimes, with the help of grants, the Trust can commission work; sometimes artists approach us to exhibit work they have produced; sometimes a theme for an exhibition prompts us to approach artists and collaborate.

A Head of His Time – Donna Kemp

There follows a list of artists who have who have contributed to the many Laurence Sterne Trust projects, exhibitions, commissions and events in the 21st century, and below that, a list of all who generously responded to our invitation to produce a work for our four exhibitions/auctions based on the ‘visual pages’ in Tristram Shandy.

This page, we hope, is a live work in progress.

The Black Page, Blank Page, Marbled Page and Flourish Exhibitions and Auctions

A series of four exhibitions have been held in recent years based on various visual pages from Tristram Shandy.  A large number of artists of all disciplines, whose names are listed below, contributed to these exhibitions, and their art works were auctioned (anonymously) to raise funds for Shandy Hall.

To all these artists we owe a huge debt of gratitude for taking on the challenge, creating a work, and so generously donating it to raise funds for the Trust in these auctions. We hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did.

Links to the websites and works of each exhibition are given below.

More about the auction/exhibitions can be found here.
